- 1 cup coconut milk
- 1 cup filtered water
- 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
- ½ teaspoon fresh ginger, finely grated
- ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 pinch black pepper
- ½ teaspoon DGL licorice powder (optional but highly beneficial)
- ¼ teaspoon slippery elm powder (optional, for extra coating effect)
- 1 teaspoon date paste (optional, to taste)
- 1 small cardamom pod, crushed (or ⅛ teaspoon ground)
- In a small saucepan, combine the coconut milk, water, date paste (if using), turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, black pepper, and cardamom.
- Warm over medium-low heat, whisking occasionally to prevent clumping. Do not boil, as high heat can destroy some of the beneficial compounds.
- Once the mixture is warm and steaming (about 3-5 minutes), remove from heat. If using, add the DGL licorice powder and slippery elm powder, whisking well to incorporate.
- Allow to steep for 2-3 minutes.
- Strain through a fine-mesh sieve if desired (especially if using fresh ginger).
- Pour into a mug and sip slowly, ideally 30-60 minutes before bedtime to allow the anti-inflammatory compounds to work while you sleep.
