Ingredients
 
Base:
  • 1 cup coconut milk 
  • 1 cup filtered water 
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • ½ teaspoon fresh ginger, finely grated
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch black pepper 
  • ½ teaspoon DGL licorice powder (optional but highly beneficial)
  • ¼ teaspoon slippery elm powder (optional, for extra coating effect)
  • 1 teaspoon date paste (optional, to taste)
  • 1 small cardamom pod, crushed (or ⅛ teaspoon ground)
Instructions:
  1. In a small saucepan, combine the coconut milk, water, date paste (if using), turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, black pepper, and cardamom.
  2. Warm over medium-low heat, whisking occasionally to prevent clumping. Do not boil, as high heat can destroy some of the beneficial compounds.
  3. Once the mixture is warm and steaming (about 3-5 minutes), remove from heat. If using, add the DGL licorice powder and slippery elm powder, whisking well to incorporate.
  4. Allow to steep for 2-3 minutes.
  5. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve if desired (especially if using fresh ginger).
  6. Pour into a mug and sip slowly, ideally 30-60 minutes before bedtime to allow the anti-inflammatory compounds to work while you sleep.
