“The secret to change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.”

Socrates

Have you ever wanted to desperately change something about yourself?

If we are all honest with ourselves, we would have all thought this way at some point.

The difficulties of life, the meandering nature of our choices and experiences can take their toll.

Our souls can become exhausted and lost.

In my own experience, it’s in these moments where we desperately seek change.

Like someone lost in the wilderness, we desire change like we would desire the safety of known surroundings.

This can be a good place.

Conversely, it can also be a destructive place.

That depends on whether you want to fight or build.

Both are instincts to humanity, both capable of being catalysts of our greatest moments of change.

Both however with two radically different possibilities.

Our instinct to fight is a survival instinct that engages the some of the most primitive parts of our brain.

Our capacity to build however incorporates some of our most highly evolved areas of our mind.

Fighting always has a short term objective, building has a long term vision.

So now we are closer to understanding the genius of what Socretes is really saying.

To become the people we want to be, we need to build who we are.

Day by day we need to focus on the future, activating our imagination and visualising our future preferred self.

Science has shown how we do this process exceptionally well as children, but much less so as adults.

In growing into that person, our mental vision needs to be focused and direct.

All energy available needs to be diverted to this process.

We can’t be distracted with fighting the old as it drains critical inner vitality.

So if you are fighting something of the old today, please let go.

Painful relationships.

Previous failures.

Betrayal.

Abuse.

Slander.

Bad habits.

Lost hope.

Like how Rafiki in the Lion King smacks Simba over the head and simply says “It doesn’t matter, It’s in the past”

Maybe today you need a wake up call.

I hope this post today smacks you metaphorically over the head.

You realise now the immense possibility that exists in front of you.

It really doesn’t matter…

It really is in the past…

Embrace that better reality to become who you are called to be.
