“He who has overcome his fears will truly be free.” Aristotle

It’s time to be honest with you all.

This feels awkward actually.

Fear has dominated my life.

I will never forget the feeling of what it was like to be diagnosed with OCD.

For those of you that don’t know, it’s an acronym for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Much of my life suddenly made sense.

The crazy intrusion of disturbing thoughts.

The habitual loops of thinking and habits.

The mind numbing fear that would overtake my body.

I did what I had to do to keep all these thoughts and fears under control.

Did I mention control?

Lots and lots… of control.

Unfortunately my experience is the reality of many of you.

To a greater or lesser extent, fear control us all.

We hate it. We loathe it actually.

So we do what we have to do to keep it at bay.

Fear is activated in a part of our brain called the limbic system.

It helped our ancestors fight off saber-toothed tigers.

Today it makes us crippling afraid of things like…

Public speaking.

The dark.

Heights.

Yes, these examples came from the top 5 rated fears.

What the hell happened to us?

We have limbic system rave parties with… the dark? Standing up and giving a speech?

It doesn’t have to be this way actually.

I regularly do talks and speak in front of large audiences.

This easily can trigger some of my worst OCD fears. Most times it tries to actually.

Fear comes in and wants to party with my limbic system.

Imagine your holding a microphone in your hand, thinking about what you want to say seconds before you take the stage…

Fear just loves to party in these moments.

But I can’t afford it to.

So fear and I have a talk.

I learn to ask it a very simple question.

Who are you?
